SUMMARY:The Taming
DESCRIPTION:The Taming \nby Lauren Gunderson \nDirected by Mary Corinne Miller \nOctober 21-29\, 2022 \nTweetering\, pandashrews\, and undying giddiness for James Madison — what else could you expect to find at a Miss America pageant? In this hilarious\, raucous\, all-female “power-play” inspired by Shakespeare’s Shrew\, contestant Katherine has political aspirations to match her beauty pageant ambitions. All she needs to revolutionize the American government is the help of one ultra-conservative senator’s aide on the cusp of a career breakthrough\, and one bleeding-heart liberal blogger who will do anything for her cause. Well\, that and a semi-historically-accurate ether trip. Here’s lookin’ at you\, America. \n“Lauren Gunderson’s clever play The Taming forces us with humor and provocation to take a hard look at the phenomenon of a democracy in action” Julie McHale\, gmtoday

SUMMARY:After the Island - A Celebration of the Life of David Rowland
DESCRIPTION:A reading of After the Island\, Silverthorne Theater Company Co-Founder David Rowland’s full-length sequel to Shakespeare’s The Tempest. \n\nIn 2012\, David Rowland penned an imaginative and thoughtful sequel to Shakespeare’s famous last work The Tempest. In taking on the subject matter of one of the Bard’s most philosophical plays\, Rowland portrays the familiar cast as they have become an indeterminate number of years after Prospero and Miranda leave the Island to return to Milan and the less than magical world they found there. \nIn the resonant rhythms of iambic pentameter\, we meet an older Duke\, Miranda and Fernando; Stephano and Trinculo reprise their drunken schemings; and Ariel returns to advise Prospero and set in motion re-connections and new beginnings. Caliban completes his transformation from semi-beast to conscious human\, renewing hope in the eventual reclamation of civilized man through reason and empathy. \nThis reading celebrates Rowland’s long and productive career as an actor\, director\, teacher and playwright. Without his inspiration\, Silverthorne Theater would never have existed. When he passed in January\, 2022\, he took large parts of our hearts with him. \n\nAdmission to this event is free\, but we ask that you make a reservation ahead of time. \nDonations in honor of the contribution David has made throughout his life to the world of live theater will be welcome. \nClick here for tickets to After the Island

SUMMARY:Port of Entry
DESCRIPTION:Theater Thursdays Play Reading Series \nPort of Entry \nby Talya Kingston \ndirected by Amy Brentano \nApril 7\, 2022 \n7:30 p.m. \nIt’s a regular day in the back office of a small New England International airport.  TSA agent Hank is orienting newbie Chloe in her new job and Jana has just arrived on a flight from the Middle East to start her new semester of graduate school.  The problem is that overnight a new law has come into effect – commonly known as “The Muslim Ban” – and it’s up to these gatekeepers to enforce it.  A play that asks the questions: who is protecting our country? And who are they protecting it from?

Kaplan \ndirected by Hilary Dennis \nNovember 18\, 2021 \n7:30 p.m. \n\nTestimonies is based on interviews with Ezidi (Yezidi) women in camps in Northern Iraq\, in 2019. \nThis play reading includes sensitive subject matter. \nRead the full description\nThe Ezidi are a Kurdish-speaking religious minority who trace their roots back to ancient Mesopotamia.
