SUMMARY:Tales of the Lost Formicans - The Play and its Context
DESCRIPTION:TALES OF THE LOST FORMICANS\, by Constance Congdon \nAmherst College professor Congdon’s play has achieved the status of a modern classic This witty and passionate play explores the story of a man with Alzheimer’s and at the same time turns into “a travel guide to Middle America conducted by aliens from outer space.” \nLife is not organized around a coherent narrative\, despite how much we would like it to be. Life can be messy\, jumpy\, nonlinear\, fragmentary and discordant\, and we might find ourselves desperately trying to make sense out of it. Tales of the Lost Formicans reflects this messiness and the effort to make sense of it\, both in its content and in its form. \nIn this session\, we will talk about the themes of this play: adolescence\, aging parent\, lost love and divorce\, memory\, and the strength of the familial unit\, and how the playwright’s use of the device of the futuristic Alien archaelogoists observing the behavior and artifacts of a dysfunctional mid-western American family affects the way we see it ourselves. \nNOTE: THIS SESSION WILL TAKE PLACE DURING THE CENTER’S FREE LUNCH TO WHICH ALL PARTICIPANTS ARE INVITED. SO THE CENTER WILL HAVE AN ACCURATE COUNT OF ATTENDEES\, YOU MUST CALL (413) 498-2186 TO MAKE A RESERVATION\,

SUMMARY:Rock Around the Block
DESCRIPTION:Get out the bobby sox and the blue suede shoes for an evening of 1950s food\, dance and fun!   On Saturday\, March 30 from 7 to 10 pm\, downtown Greenfield is the place to be for ROCK AROUND THE BLOCK\, Silverthorne Theater’s spring spectacular benefit party. The Perch\, Hawks & Reed’s fourth floor performance space will be transformed into THE hot spot for a 50s-style sock hop – think of all those high school gyms suddenly becoming places of anticipation and romance. DJ ‘Rockin’ Johnnie’ will spin the platters while you dance\, reminisce\, or find out what the 50s were all about! \nFrom 7 to 7:30 pm\, dance instructors will teach you newbies (or you veterans who just need a refresher) swing\, jitterbug and good old rock and roll! And what would a sock hop be without pizza? Multiple area pizza houses will vie for the top spot in a Battle of the Pies with partygoers enjoying sample bites from each before casting their votes. \nAnd here’s a great deal! Anyone under 40 pays only $35; 41 and older\, tickets are $55. (Couples with one person under 40 get the lower rate.) Costumes optional\, but when else are you going to be able to connect with your inner Elvis or Brenda Lee? Be there or be square. \nThe Perch at Hawks & Reed Performing Arts Center at 289 Main Street\, Greenfield\, is fully handicapped accessible. Beverages will be available at H & R’s cash bar\, and snacks and dessert part of the fun! \nAll proceeds from the event benefit Silverthorne’s upcoming 2019 Season that opens April 25 with Tales of the Lost Formicans\, Amherst playwright Constance Congdon’s classic story of futuristic Alien archaeologists struggling to make sense of the life and mores of a dysfunctional 20th century mid-western American family . \n
